What is Love?

I just thought I might share some of my thoughts on this subject with you. Please leave me some feedback.

What is Love?

This is a very complicated question, to say the least. I think Mr. Webster probably popped a blood vessel thinking about this one. But anyway, I believe he can possibly help us out with a worldly definition. Maybe a definition of what love feels like, which most of us already know.

But for the true meaning of love, I think we will have to ask the creator of it. And I am not sure that there is a sole definition. But rather a more perplexed meaning. The Bible refers to one of the greatest kinds of love as charity. The word charity is often thought  of in today’s world as a term meaning a handout or having some sort of sympathy. And that is only half right.

The strong’s concordance translates the word from the word agape {ag-ah'-pay} which is a charitable love, the greatest of loves, not just an emotional love but a giving love. A love that creates sacrifice. This is the same love that the bible refers to in the very familiar bible verse KJV(John 3:16).  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

So you can see how we have in a sense watered down the word charity to half its strength. Once again in today’s world we use it as a word to describe sympathy or a handout. The bible uses it to describe an awesome sacrificial love that is not just an emotion but also a force that generates sympathy and handouts. Charity in today’s terms means to give. But charity in the bible meant to give because you love.

The bible says in KJV(1Cor 13:13)  And now abidith faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. The Bible also states that a person can give away everything they have, but without Charity it is meaningless or it even goes as far as to say if we sacrifice our bodies it would be useless without Charity. So, in short I guess one could say that without the correct motivation, the act itself  would gain no favor with God. God does not look upon mans actions only, but instead, his heart. I suspect that as we look further into this subject we will see many examples of sacrifices made because of love but the definition itself will be very difficult  to capture. For I am fully persuaded that the definition of love resides in the heavens above and is not of this earth nor is it of man, but it is a reflection of the person of God that shines in the hearts of Christians.

I totally agree that only Heaven will teach us what love really is. I have been blessed in this life to love and be loved in many different ways, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, children, a grandchild, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, a husband and God. The love I feel for each of them is different and seems to grow stronger over the years, even to those who have gone on, however, each time I feel that I have experienced every kind of love, I find out that I am wrong. How anyone could try to define love is beyond me. It seems the whole Webster dictionary could be filled with that one definition and it still wouldn't fully explain it.

After reading your comments on love, i couldn't help but remember when my husband and i were first married and times were rough & rocky.I would think "Lord why is my husband so argumentative" etc.
I read a book during this time about loving the right way,God way ,with agape. The more i read the more i realized I was the problem ,not my husband.Bottom line was,God changed me through His word when i began asking him to and allowing him to, and appling Gods love to my life, it became a part of me the best part!I have the greatest husband on earth now that i am not so ........all of those things i thought he was lol.Gina ;)
